Today's day began bright and early at 5:30 in the am. We had planned a trip to Caral, which is 3 hours away from Lima and is the oldest city in the Americas.
On our way there, we drove past shantytowns after shantytowns and it got more and more depressing as we went further away from the city. The living conditions of these small communities are so incredibly horrible, you would have to be there to understand the feeling. After about 20 minutes of driving past shantytowns, I couldn't take it anymore and decided to look away as I began to tear up just a little bit. I managed to fall asleep for the rest of the ride to Caral.
Caral was pretty amazing. It is currently an archaeological site which is dated to be the oldest in the Americas. There were some pretty spectacular pyramids and the view was breathtaking. The pictures I have taken does not do any justice to how amazing the mountains, pyramids and the view in general was.
Here are some pictures from today...

| Yes, those are actual HUTS held together by probably nothing, in the middle of the desert, inhabited by families |
 |
| Yes, people actually live without roofs, or windows, running water. Believe it or not, this is the majority of how Peruvian people live. |

| The most beautiful scene off the edge of one of the pyramids. It was 100x more beautiful in person |
 |
| On route to exploring the pyramids haha (not really, just wanted a cool pose) |

Today was also the first day I finally called home to speak to my parents. Skype might just be the best thing ever, but I wish I can actually see them instead of just hearing their voices. CT and I have been using FaceTime since I've been gone and it's been amazing. This week just flew by, and tomorrow we begin our work placement at the school! It'll be a busy week, but I'll keep you guys posted!
Hasta luego, xoxo -m
